Runner of the Year

The New York Harriers Runner of the Year (RotY) competition determines the top runners on the team each year. A Harrier’s RotY points total will be the sum of their top six (6) races in this calendar year. Those are determined by the number of RotY points you scored in a given race. See table below for details on how points are tallied. A runner must complete at least five (5) of the designated races in order to be eligible for any awards, regardless of total points accumulated.

HARRIER POINTS-BASED AWARDS

Runner of the Year: Top total points for each gender, regardless of age group
Masters Runner of the Year:
Top total points for over‐40 female and male
Age‐group awards for each gender based on total points (using NYRR age groups)

The coveted "H" Award has two requirements:
1.    You must participate in at least seven (7) of the designated races
2.    You must score at least 90 points (not limited to best 6 races)

ADDITIONAL RULES

  1. “No double dipping” rule: If you place in both open and masters categories, you will be awarded the highest of open or masters bonus points, not both. The masters points don’t “kick down” to the next master. For example, a master finishes as our 4th overall Harrier, so she is awarded 6 points. The second master, who did not finish among the open category scorers, is awarded 3 points for being the second master.

  2. Percentile in age group is NOT the same thing as Age Graded % (AG%). Your age group is the set of people in your age range and gender at that particular race.

  3. Race win and Percentile bonuses will only be awarded for designated team races with one hundred or more participants. Neither of these bonuses will be awarded for races with less than 100 participants.

SPECIAL CASES AND NOTES

  • If a race is cancelled, postponed, changed or otherwise disappears, no points will be awarded. Should this happen, awards point total requirements will be adjusted and published accordingly.

  • Your age group (including your masters or open status) is based on the age that you run the majority of your qualifying races. For example, if you’re 29 for 3 races and 30 for 2 races, you’re considered in the 25-29 category (not the 30-34 category). In the event you’ve run half of your qualifying races at one age and half at the next age, we round down. It’s the “tie goes to the younger” rule. For example, if you run 3 races at age 39 and 3 races at 40, you’re considered 39 for the purposes of RotY age group.

  • For any race produced by the Harriers and included in the team points race series, runners will receive points as outlined above. Those that wish to participate solely as a volunteer will receive race participation points that will count toward your “H” award and RotY totals, but will not receive any of the additional bonus points.
